Brew Files: Twisted X
If you've been around my blog for any amount of time, you know that I really, really, really like beer. I like light beer. I like dark beer. I like hoppy beer. I like mellow beer. I. Like. Beer.
This weekend we went with some buddies to visit some other buddies in the Austin area. We had quite a few fun things planned. One particular thing I looked forward to was a brewery trip. Craft beer? Yes, please. I had amazing thoughts of our Maui Brewing Company visit flooding my memory.Saturday, we ventured out to Twisted X Brewing Company. We got there pretty early, but we're all Aggies so we didn't see a problem with beginning our beer drinking day at 10 in the morning. Seize the day. Right?We walked into the empty brewery and decided on the day's poison treat. I always like to try what's available, and since there was a flight option, that's what I opted for. The flight included 6 beers--the first 6 on the "menu". There was an option to substitute one of the beers with one outside of the first 6. Since there was a jalapeno beer on the flight list, I decided to sub an IPA for that... i already know I'm not a jalapeno beer fan. Just, ew. No thanks.
I tasted the beers in numerical order (except I saved what I swapped for #3--Tribute--for last because I knew it would be the most flavorful). These are my thoughts:1. Twisted X - Premium Lager: Very light. Easy to drink. Nothing spectacular, but nothing I'd turn my nose up at.2. Cow Creek - Vienna Lager: Yum! Has more of a body than the Twisted X Lager. Darker. Smooth. No crazy off flavors. Quite possibly my favorite of the bunch. I was sad when it was over.3. Tribute - West Coast II IPA: Very hoppy. Very bold. Not the best IPA I've had, but it definitely didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth.4. Chupahopra - Indian Pale Ale: Not ridiculously hoppy. Not bad. Not delicious.5. Siesta - Prickly Pear: Eh... No.6. La Epoca - Saison: Is that a wheat? No. Really? Just, no. Take this away from me. Yuck.We also went on a short tour of the brewery. Anything I can see how a specific company makes their brew, I'm in! They currently use a 30 barrel system. They starting off using a 3 barrel system in 2009. They began brewing for the public in 2011, and moved to their current location in November 2013. They're still a very small brewery, but I think they have some real potential. If I come across Cow Creek in the grocery store, I'll pick that brew up.They're in the process of aging some beer in wine and whiskey barrels. I can't wait to see the outcome. They should hit stores around Christmas time. What a gift!
