Even More Two Player Board Games for Couples
For years board games have been our substitution to frequent date nights. You buy them once and you can play them as many times as your heart desires - a cheap date night. It started in college, but we see no end in sight to these simple date nights, especially because we're about to be parents. Getting out of the house alone will take a lot more planning and money from now on. You mean you don't want to watch our kid for free? Still, finding board games that work really well for two players can be a challenge.

What makes a good two player board game? Most comes down to personal preference, but games that require very little altering in order to play with two players is key. Many games today can be played with only two players, but the overall point of the game is lost. Games that play exceptionally well regardless of player number can be hard to find, but luckily I've given you options here, here, and again with these:
Azul
Very Easy Level Set Up & Play
Ah, my current "fast" favorite board game for two players! Azul takes NO time to learn or to set up, making it the perfect board game for an impromptu match after work on a Tuesday. It's a beautiful game, but that matters little when it comes to play, right? 
The point of the game is to collect tiles of various patterns in order to create a Spanish style wall at a palace in Portugal. You take turns choosing tiles that have been placed at random, and place them on your game board to play. Even with just two players you can anticipate what tiles your opponent is going for and block them before they get the chance... but you still have to be cognizant of the tiles you choose or your tiles might end up broken on the floor instead of plastered to the wall. 
Roll for the Galaxy
Easy Level Set Up & Play
Roll for the Galaxy is a game that looks like it might be difficult to learn, but once you sit down with it, comes rather quickly. It's a space exploration game that has you colonizing planets to gain money or resources. It's fairly quick to play (~30 minutes). There's very little confrontation between players which makes this game great for any number of players. Roll for the Galaxy is great for couples who don't want to turn date night into a giant fight. ? 
You're free to choose your own strategy with this game, but focusing on what your opponent may want to might increase your available options during game play. 
Above and Below
Intermediate Level Set Up & Play
The artwork in this game is bar none. Above and Below is very unique and it has a "choose your own adventure" type of mechanism. You make choices and read events from a story book, so each game is completely unique. The premise is simple: you build buildings above and below ground, exploring caverns for riches, but be careful because there are dangerous monsters lurking!
It does take a little time to learn, but it's not overly complicated. Because you're playing against the story, there's little interaction between actual players. Your only real inter-player strategy is grabbing cards your opponent might want before they get a chance. Overall, this is a great came for two players.
Board games have really come a long way for two players. Gone are the days where your only real gaming options are Monopoly, Clue, and The Game of Life. Now there are so many options and types to choose from. This post (and my prior game boarding posts) are really just the tip of the iceberg.
