Home Decor Inspiration: Open Concept Living Room Design

Buying a house is incredibly exciting, and a lot scary. I've wanted to own a home for as long as I can remember, and it's finally a reality! Earlier I let you in on my home decor plans for my sitting room, but I have a lot more in the works as far as home decor goes. We have 2 additional living spaces (a living room and a loft) to decorate and we have special plans for them both. This is what we have in mind for our open concept living room design! To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what we're going to do with the loft yet, but the living room design is coming together nicely! I mentioned in my last home decor post that we were painting the entire house gray. It took us about 10 days, but my husband and I finished the entire house (except for the stair case). It looks so much more uniform and we are loving the color we chose. We went with Behr Heirloom Gray throughout.

Light Gray Living Room

We spend a lot of time on the couch, and I'm not ashamed to admit that. It's where a lot of our quality time is spent, so it's important to us to create a space that is inviting. Our old apartment living room didn't have any overhead lighting. Like, none. We only had lamps and a sliding glass door that went to a dark covered patio. We hated how dark it was and that really affected our moods. For this living room we are going for light and bright! We recently replaced the dim globe overhead light with a ceiling fan and it's much brighter. It's supposed to be in the single digits this week, so we're not using the fan part yet, but it will surely be nice to have in the summer.

Open Concept Living Room Sectional

Since we moved 800 miles away from our friends and family, we decided that creating a space where we could host them for several nights was important. Our new home is fairly open concept, so there's a lot of living area between the kitchen and the living room - where most people tend to congregate during get-togethers. In order to maintain that open feel, we chose this sectional sofa to place along the half wall and outer living room wall. The sectional is pretty large, and will take up quite a bit of wall space in the living room, so we don't plan to add much more to it. A coffee table, TV stand, and small side table should complete the living room.Editor's Note: Yeah. Our couch arrived... and it's huge. It's a good thing we knew that going in, because otherwise all my other design plans would be squashed. We have room for a round or square coffee table, thin side table, and a TV stand. The good thing is that the open concept layout doesn't make the room feel cramped, despite the oversized couch. ??

Round Coffee Table

I think that round coffee tables look fantastic with sectionals and because we don't plan to have large side tables, a coffee table is a must! We haven't quite decided on a specific coffee table, yet, but I have my eyes on a few.I mentioned before that I really love rough wood elements as opposed to smooth polished wood. I would love something like this wood stump coffee table. It brings outdoor elements indoors and I absolutely love that. My heart is saying yes to that beauty, but my wallet is saying, "maybe not."I also like this distressed wooden coffee table, and it's a bit more affordable. Wayfair has a ton of different options, so I'm confident we'll find a great one. I'd love the coffee table to be a real eye-catcher, but also be sturdy and useful. My husband is afraid a glass top would break easily, and I see his point. Maybe we can find something in the middle that will meet our home decor needs, but also meet our standards for longevity.

Pretty TV Stand

I've looked and I've looked and we've found nothing that fits. Has anyone else noticed that there's a lot of cheap looking furniture out there? What happened to quality? I'm not looking for a mega-deal here. I'm willing to spend some $$$ on a good TV stand... but where. are. they?

[show_shopthepost_widget id="2127319"]We've been in the house about two weeks now. Our things arrived this Wednesday now we're living amongst boxes disassembled furniture. I'm trying to remind myself that it's ok. My friend Lindsay reminded me that it's a good idea to change my expectations right now. Life is crazy. We're entering into the holidays. We just moved. It's ok that there are boxes strewn about and that I haven't blogged in eons. It's ok. It will get done.
